Day of the Dead is an ancient pre-hispanic tradition honoring the beloved dead and ancestors.
The altars are usually three tiers high. A clear path is made from the house entrance to the altar for the spirits to travel by burning incense. A small cross of ash is placed in the path, stepping on it will dispel any guilt carried by the journeying spirits. Elements common to many altars include meaningful photos and personal items, candles, incense and a space to store or burn slips of paper with prayers written on them. Some altars include a religious icon such as a statue or picture of the Virgin Mary or other spiritual figure |
